ABOUT THE PICTURES
[9/15/2008: I updated this page as I've been updating many of the older albums recently to ensure that everything works together in a semi-logical way.]
In the last month I've augmented my arsenal with a speedlight (external flash), a tripod, and yet another new lens, this one a super wide-angle. The most important of these purchases was the tripod, which opens up a lot of possibilities. Many of the night exposures of bridges and fountains would have been impossible without it. It also makes general photos, even during the day, much sharper because there's no camera motion. In long exposures like the night shots, you can also see ghost people moving through the frame, an effect I find pleasing. I also like that the colors at night are more vivid on a camera than they are to the human eye.
The wide-angle is an exotic lens that wouldn't be as exciting to the average snap-shooter, but for me it's incredible. It has a range of roughly 17-35mm -- its tightest zoom is the widest angle on most compact cameras (my compact Canon is 35-200mm). It makes landscapes, especially treescapes, look more epic and big and awesome. It also makes people look scary and weird (I love this). I can't get enough of it. I bought this lens in anticipation of the fall color season.
The star pictures came from Labor Day weekend up in rural Connecticut. It's so dark that you can almost see the Milky Way with the naked eye. A camera can see even more than the human eye, so I set up the tripod. The pictures are kind of dim and mushy, but after living in New York for a year, it looks pretty cool to me. I tried shooting out my apartment window at the night sky after this, and I couldn't capture a single star.
Feel free to email me if you're interested in purchasing prints.
Please don't save images onto your computer, link to them, etc. -- I pay $5 a month so you can see them here, at my website, any time you want!
