ABOUT THE PICTURES
[9/13/2008: I just did an overhaul of this gallery. I trimmed a number of pictures I felt added nothing to it, and added a couple I found in the archives. The main purpose of the overhaul was to fix the file names and standardize the sizes. To my horror, I discovered that I lost the original jpeg file of the picture of my college apartment. This happened when I first made this gallery last summer; I must have accidentally used the original file without backing it up, so the reduced, unprintable version is all I have now. Yuck.]
I made many of the above images using a polarizing filter over my camera lens. That's what makes the skies and water so blue. The polarizer cost $30 and it's one of my new favorite things. You can also hold one in front of a compact camera for the same effect, so long as you can keep the camera steady with your trigger hand.
I used my dad's old 50mm manual focus, manual exposure lens for several of the portraits. To make the last photograph, "the discussion," I had to open the lens up to its widest aperture, f/1.4, and turn the ISO up to 3200 -- the maximum extent of the camera's (considerable) low-light abilities. It was worth it to get that shot.
The demolished building in Ann Arbor was destroyed for construction purposes. The publicity stills are from a personal favor I did for my friend Charlie from work (the guy who ran the half-marathon). We met because everybody at the office mistakes us for each other, but I don't think we look so alike side-by-side.
The "beer and soda" general store was a place I meant to take a picture of for a while, but when I saw that dude's undershirt popping out -- I didn't even notice him while I was shooting -- I said to myself, "this one's a keeper."
Feel free to email me if you're interested in purchasing prints.
Please don't save images onto your computer, link to them, etc. -- I pay $5 a month so you can see them here, at my website, any time you want!
